Production

Kroon Gouda Holland is produced and ripened in the classic Dutch cheese-making tradition. It is matured for 12 weeks to give it a full flavour and rich taste. Gouda cheese with the addition of pungent aromatic cumin seeds giving a warm spicy flavour that blends beautifully with the texture of the cheese. The process of making Gouda, including the washing of the curd, therefore creates an elastic curd and a mellow flavour.

History of Gouda with Cumin

Gouda has been a popular cheese since the 12th century and was shipped to France and further afield. Named after the Dutch town “Gouda”, which has a rich cheese-making tradition, Gouda is creamy, with a slightly strong and robust flavour. In addition, it is smooth with a hint of caramel. As Gouda cheese gets older however, its taste becomes more strong and pronounced. This Gouda is typically aged approximately 4 – 6 months, and after that is clad in distinctive yellow wax and protective clear cellophane foil.

Serving

Gouda cheese has a wide range of applications: for instance in sandwiches, as a snack, as an ingredient in hot and cold dishes, and similarly as an item on the cheese platter. With its flavoursome cumin seeds, this cheese makes a fine lunch or appetizer platter. Serve slices of Gouda with Cumin with cold meats, spicy-sweet honey mustard and a good dark bread such as rye or pumpernickel. These can be served warm or cold and topped with slices of ripe tomato and parsley or fresh rocket salad. Great sandwich filler or grated on top of salads. Consider it a semi-hard cow’s milk flavoured cheese, which is good with a nice white Riesling.
